Alcohol abuse among young people has increased

More and more adolescents had to be hospitalized for alcohol poisoning

According to evaluations by the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden, the number of adolescents who were admitted to a clinic due to alcohol poisoning continues to increase. In the age group of 15 to 19 year olds, the number of inpatient hospital stays increased, whereas it is slightly lower for the ten to 14 year olds. A total of 26,428 children and adolescents aged 10 to 19 years were admitted to a clinic in Germany due to acute alcohol poisoning. According to statistical evaluations, there are around 319 acute cases of alcohol poisoning for every 100,000 children and adolescents. The total number of treatment cases rose by 2.6 percent.

"Colorful instead of blue" campaign
Under the motto "colorful instead of blue", the DAK is continuing its nationwide campaign against increasing alcohol abuse among young people. In the new poster competition, students between the ages of 12 and 17 should respond with art and creativity to the so-called binge drinking. The patron is the drug commissioner of the federal government, Mechthild Dyckmans. A total of 11,000 schools were contacted and invited to participate.

According to the latest federal statistics, around 26,400 children and adolescents with alcohol poisoning ended up in hospital in 2009. This is a new high, although the increase is less than in 2008. "The development is still alarming," says DAK CEO Herbert Rebscher. "Because binge drinking with a hospital stay is only the tip of the iceberg, parents, teachers and politicians should act quickly in their areas of responsibility." According to a DAK study, every second 15-year-old now drinks regularly, at least in a short time drinks five glasses of alcohol.

The DAK campaign “colorful instead of blue” is intended to make schoolchildren think and rethink the topic of alcohol abuse. “I know,” said Mechthild Dyckmans, the Federal Drugs Commissioner at the start, “that the competition in schools is used as an opportunity to provide information in the classroom about the responsible use of alcohol and the dangers of intoxication. The creative examination of intoxication is a great way for schools to make their contribution to addiction prevention. After all, schools - alongside parents - are very important when it comes to educating people about the dangers of drug use and alcohol abuse in particular. The federal, state and local governments must also continue and intensify their preventive measures in order to effectively counter the intoxication of children and adolescents. "

Together with the drug officer, the successful band "Luxuslärm" also sits on the federal jury, which, after the submission deadline on April 30, selects the federal winner from 16 state winners. "Waking up after a binge drinking in the clinic is everything, but not cool," emphasizes the band. In 2010, 8,000 pupils nationwide took part in the "colorful instead of blue" campaign. Information about the new competition is available in all DAK service centers or on the Internet at www.dak-buntstattblau.de. The initiative is part of the "Aktion Glasklar", with which the DAK has been teaching pupils, teachers and parents about alcohol since 2004. (sb)
